Antique / Vintage Toy Car, 100 Years Old 1920's Bing Model T
Surprising to see a toy from as far back as 100 years!
Makes you wonder how it is that some kid didn't trash it. Be nice to know the back story for this toy. It's been on my desk for years, time to move it along.
Just to set the stage, around the time that this car was manufactured: Women had just gotten the right to vote; A first class stamp was 2 cents; Band aids just came out; Milk was delivered to your home in a glass milk bottle; Furnaces were coal fired; and, Sliced bread and bubble gum just came on the scene!
Here's what I do know about the toy:
The company?
The maker of this toy, Bing, goes back to 1863 and was once the largest toy company in the world - they had the largest toy factory as well. They were located in Nuremberg, Germany. One of the things that makes Bing stand out is their use of the "slot and tab" method of assembly which they perfected.
To give you an idea of how large Bing was, in 1914, they had some 5,000 workers whereas their competitor had 600.
The tab and slot method of assembly made these toy cars very exportable. Their toys were sold though catalog from Sears and Roebucks.
Bing Company (in 1932) was in liquidation. The war, inflation, along with other factors put an end to Bing. The company finally went out of business in 1933.
This toy car has a BW (Bing Werke) trademark on bottom which means it was manufactured somewhere between 1925 and 1934.
This is a collectors item!
The photos are in place of a thorough description. Please take a good look at them. What I can say is the wind up mechanism works, but the coil (spring) is too worn to make the car go when set on the floor - the wheels will spin. It also appears to have a headlight missing and someone scratched 1924 on one of its doors.
