Getting Started

Are there fees for bidding online?

There is no fee for bidding online with KING LOUIES AUCTIONS. Buyers are responsible for the fees for items won at auction, in addition to tax and shipping. Each Auction House may charge a buyer's premium (which is an additional fee that a winning bidder is required to pay above the auction price) as well as shipping, handling, and applicable taxes.

Auction terminology

Absentee Bid/Proxy Bid:
A person who may not attend the sale but submits, in advance, a written or oral bid that is the top price he/she will pay for a given property.

Absentee Bid/Proxy Bid:
A method of bidding for those who cannot or do not wish to attend an auction. KING LOUIES AUCTIONS allows a bidder to leave a bid on any item listed online by clicking “Bid Now” and entering a bid amount. All bids are kept confidential from the auctioneer and other bidders. At the time of the live auction, the bidding system will attempt to execute your bid at the lowest cost possible.

Appraisal:
A formal evaluation of the fair market and/or insurance value of a given property. Fair market value represents an item would bring at auction. Insurance value reflects what we believe it would cost to replace an item.

"As Is:"
Also known as "as is, where is" and "in its present condition." Typically, this is a sign that no return privileges will be granted. This also means that the property is sold with all existing faults and imperfections. We encourage potential buyers to inspect each item carefully before bidding.

Auction:
A method of selling property in a public forum through open and competitive bidding. Also referred to as: public auction, auction sale, or sale.

Auctioneer:
A trained professional who presides over the auction, initiating the sale of a lot by describing the item and starting the bidding. Once the first bid is made, others may offer higher bids. Bidders may be present in the saleroom, on the phone, or online. Auctioneers also place bids on behalf of absentee bidders and finally determine when the highest bid has been made. If a work sells, the auctioneer announces, “sold.” If the item does not meet its reserve or there are no bidders, the auctioneer signifies this with a “pass.”

Auction Block:
The podium or raised platform where the auctioneer stands while conducting the auction. "Placing (an item) on the auction block" means to sell something at auction.

Bid:
The amount a prospective buyer signals the auctioneer he/she would pay to buy the lot during bidding. Bids are usually in standardized increments established by the auctioneer.

Bid Caller:
The person who actually "calls," "cries" or "auctions" the property at an auction, recognizing bidders and acknowledging the highest bidder. Commonly known as the auctioneer.

Bid History:
A historical list of all the bids made on a particular auction during or after the auction.

Bid Increments:
The amount by which the auctioneer increases the bidding. In general, the auctioneer will request bids of about 10% higher than the previous bid. For instance, if the bidding opens at $5000, subsequent bids of $5500, $6000, $6500, etc. would follow. The figure is generally rounded up or down at the auctioneer's discretion.

Bidder (Paddle) Number:
The number issued to each person who registers at an auction.

Buy It Now (BIN):
An option that sellers can include on their Auction listings. This feature enables buyers to purchase the item immediately at a fixed price, as opposed to using the live auction bidding process.

Buyer's Premium:
An additional service charge, for which the buyer is responsible, may be added to the price of sold items. If so, this will be indicated on the item page.

Catalog or Brochure:
A publication advertising and describing the property(ies) available for sale at public auction, often including photographs, property descriptions, and the terms and conditions of the sale.

Clerk:
The person employed by the principal auctioneer or auction firm to record what is sold, to whom, and for what price.

Competing Bid:
During a sale, the auctioneer may be accepting competing bids for an item from various sources; these include (but are not limited to):

  • bids from an in-house audience

  • telephone bids

  • book bids

  • absentee bids

  • other bidding platforms

Commission:
The fee charged to the seller by the auctioneer for providing services – usually a percentage of the gross selling price of the property established by contract (the listing agreement) prior to the auction.

Consignee:
The auctioneer or auction house operator to whom goods are entrusted by another (consignor) for sale at auction.

Consignor:
The person or authorized agent or entity that consigns goods to an auctioneer. The consignor is usually the seller.

Escrow:
Money held in trust by a third party until the seller makes delivery of the merchandise to the buyer.

Estate Auction:
The sale of property left by a person at his/her death. An estate auction can involve the sale of personal and/or real property.

Estimate:
Each lot is given a low and high estimate, representing the opinion of the auctioneer's experts about the range in which the lot might sell at auction. Estimates are based on the examination of an item and recent auction records of comparable pieces. An estimate provides prospective buyers with an important preliminary guide to value and is generally the basis for establishing the reserve price.

Fair Market Value:
A term frequently used by appraisers referring to their judgment and opinion about an object’s likely sale price if offered by a willing seller to a willing buyer. Since the auction process is open to all bidders, a sale at auction is considered to be a measure of Fair Market Value.

Fair Warning:
A warning that's sometimes given by the auctioneer that the hammer is about to come down on a lot. The fair warning offers one last chance to increase the bidding. If there are no subsequent bids, the auctioneer’s hammer falls and the sale is completed.

Grading:
The process for determining the physical condition of an item. Different items have different grading systems.

Hammer Price:
The winning bid for a lot at auction. It is the price upon which the auctioneer’s hammer falls, determining the sale price, but does not include the buyer's premium.

Lien:
An adverse claim or charge against an item when that item is being used as collateral for a debt.

Lot:
An item or set of items for sale in an auction, lots are normally denoted by a "lot" number.

Make An Offer/Best Offer:
Make An Offer (MAO) lets you offer the seller a price you're willing to pay on Buy It Now items. The seller decides whether to accept, reject, or counter your offer.

National Auctioneers Association:
A U.S. association of individual auctioneers united to maintain ethical standards for the auction profession; promote the enactment of just and reasonable laws, ordinances, and regulations affecting auction selling; make the public more aware of the advantages of auction selling; and generally improve the business conditions affecting the auction profession.

Online/Virtual Auction:
An auction that is for online bidders only and is not conducted in front of a traditional live audience. These auction types may have reserve items in which the auctioneers bid in order to protect the reserve.

On-site Auction:
An auction that is conducted on the premises of the property being sold.

On-site Bidder:
A bidder who is physically participating at the auction venue.

Outbid:
To submit a maximum bid that is higher than another buyer's maximum bid.

Pass/Unsold:
Terms used by the auctioneer when an item fails to reach its reserve at auction.

Preview:
Specified date and time a property is available for prospective buyer viewing and audits in advance of the sale. Also known as open house or inspection.

Provenance:
An important part of the authentication process, provenance establishes the chain of ownership back (if possible) to the date an item was created. Provenance can significantly impact the value of an object.

Reserve or Reserve Price:
The minimum price that a seller is willing to accept for an item to be sold at auction. This amount is never formally disclosed.

SMS Alerts:
Alerts sent via text message to your mobile device to inform you when another bidder has placed a bid on an item.

Starting Price:
The likely starting bid for a given auction, set by the seller at the time of listing.

Traditional Auction:
An auction that is conducted in front of a live audience at a physical location where the items for sale are located.

Valuation:
A detailed description and the current value of the property are prepared by the auctioneer's staff. Valuations, which differ from auction estimates, are used for a variety of needs, including charitable contributions, collateral loans, estate taxes, estate planning, and insurance.

Tips for winning

Thousands of hard-to-find collectibles and one-of-a-kind treasures are added to KING LOUIES AUCTIONS daily.

Found an item you love? Here are some tips to help you win your next auction:

  1. Register and submit bids early. Some auction houses require additional information to ensure a fair auction with vetted bidders. Allow 1-2 days for approval. Early registration also gives you more time to place bids before the auction goes live.

  2. Place your bids early. If two absentee bids are tied, the bid placed first wins—so don’t wait to act!

  3. Set your maximum bid before the auction closes. Our hassle-free bidding system automatically bids the lowest amount needed to keep you in the lead and only increases if someone else bids higher. Remember to save your favorite items by clicking ‘Save Item’ to keep track of them.

  4. Have a payment method on file. This shows auction houses you’re serious about winning and helps speed up the payment process once the auction ends.

  5. Be ready to bid as lots close. Bidding in the final moments increases your chances of winning, especially in auctions open to floor bidders. Download the KING LOUIES AUCTIONS mobile app for iOS and Android to bid anytime, anywhere. Mobile alerts will notify you when your items are up for auction.

Happy bidding!

What are the ways to buy lots on KING LOUIES AUCTIONS?

You have the option to bid live in real-time during the auction or place an absentee bid beforehand, allowing you to participate ahead of the live bidding once the auction begins. When a live auction starts, KING LOUIES AUCTIONS bidders get access to an online bidding console to follow and join the auction in real-time.

Additionally, KING LOUIES AUCTIONS offers a “Buy Now” option where you can purchase select items that may not have sold during the auction at a fixed price or negotiate a better rate directly with the Auction House.

What is KING LOUIES AUCTIONS?

KING LOUIES AUCTIONS is an online marketplace that connects buyers and sellers through live and timed auctions. Our platform allows you to discover, bid on, and purchase unique collectibles, antiques, art, and more from trusted auction houses around the world — all from the comfort of your home.

With real-time bidding, absentee bids, and “Buy Now” options, KING LOUIES AUCTIONS offers a flexible and secure way to participate in auctions no matter where you are.

Bidding

Absentee bid opened at max amount

If your maximum absentee bid is reached during a live auction, it means there was competitive bidding that pushed the price up to your limit. This usually happens when another participant places a bid close to your maximum, prompting the system to automatically match and apply your top bid.

Example:
Let’s say you submitted a maximum absentee bid of $1000. During the live auction, another bidder places a $950 bid. Because your $1000 bid is already on file, the system automatically uses it to outbid the $950 offer.

Why the System Jumps to Your Maximum Bid:
When the live auction begins, the system doesn’t start from the opening bid and work its way up through each increment. Instead, it may immediately place your highest absentee bid to reflect current demand and speed up the process. This helps avoid unnecessary delays and brings the auction straight to the active bidding level.

Am I bidding against yourself?

Important Note About Absentee Bidding at KING LOUIES AUCTIONS

At KING LOUIES AUCTIONS, the KING LOUIES AUCTIONS system ensures fair bidding by preventing users from bidding against themselves. This means that if you place a new absentee bid on a lot you’ve already bid on, your previous bid will automatically be replaced. You can only have one active maximum absentee bid per lot at any given time.

To view or manage your absentee bids, simply visit your My Bids page.

Can I bid lower than the start price?

If KING LOUIES AUCTIONS allows bids below the starting price, you’ll be able to submit a lower absentee bid without encountering an error. However, if bids below the starting price are not permitted, the system will not accept them.

During the live auction, the only way to place a bid below the starting price is if the auctioneer manually lowers the opening bid. If this happens, the change will be reflected in real-time on your bid button in the live bidding console.

Please note: Most auction houses, including KING LOUIES AUCTIONS, typically do not accept bids below the starting price.

How do Bidding increments work?

At KING LOUIES AUCTIONS, bidding increments are determined by our in-house structure and may vary depending on the current bid amount. As the price increases during the live auction, the bidding increment will adjust accordingly to reflect the appropriate level for that range.

You can view the full list of bidding increments by checking the Auction Details or reviewing the Terms & Conditions at the bottom of any listed catalog on our website.

BID INCREMENTS

Price Bid Increment
$0.00 $1.00
$5.00 $5.00
$50.00 $10.00
$200.00 $25.00
$500.00 $50.00
$1,000.00 $100.00
$2,500.00 $250.00
$5,000.00 $500.00
$10,000.00 $1,000.00
$50,000.00 $2,500.00

How do I know if I won an item?

If you win a lot, it will appear in your Won Items page within your profile. You will also receive an email notification confirming your win.

To view your won items, simply hover over or click the Account drop-down menu and select "Won Items."

On this page, you’ll find a list of all items you’ve won. You can also contact the auction house directly or pay your invoice if it has been sent through KING LOUIES AUCTIONS.

Please note that all payment and shipping arrangements are handled directly with the auction house. If you don’t find the information you need in the auction’s Terms & Conditions, we recommend reaching out to the auction house for assistance. Typically, auction houses send an invoice with payment instructions via email within 24–48 hours after the auction closes.

How do I know if I'm the high bidder?

At KING LOUIES AUCTIONS, bidders can view the leading absentee bid for an item at the next increment above the next lowest absentee bid.

For example:
If one bidder places a bid of $80 on an item, and you place a bid of $100 with a $10 increment, anyone else viewing the item will see the current bid as $90.

When you place a bid, the system will notify you if you are the highest absentee bidder on that item. If another bidder submits a higher absentee bid than yours, you will receive an email notification informing you that you have been outbid. This update will also be visible on your My Bids page.

How do I know what the reserve price is?

Reserve Prices and Buyer Information at KING LOUIES AUCTIONS

To protect the bidder experience, KING LOUIES AUCTIONS does not reveal reserve prices through the system.

Some auction houses may choose to disclose whether an item has a reserve or if the reserve has not yet been met, but this is entirely up to the auction house’s discretion.

Please note: Auction houses are not required to notify buyers if an item has a reserve price.

How to leave an absentee bid

How to Place Absentee Bids at KING LOUIES AUCTIONS

You can place absentee bids in advance of the live auction. Our hassle-free absentee bidding system helps ensure you get the best possible price on the items you want. Be sure to submit your maximum bid amount—the highest amount you’re willing to pay for the item—before the live auction begins.

Your bid will automatically stay at the lowest amount necessary to keep you in the lead and will only increase up to your maximum if another bidder places a competing bid.

To place an absentee bid:

  1. Select your maximum bid from the drop-down menu on the item page.

  2. You may also enter a custom bid by typing an amount or by clicking “Enter a Custom Bid.” We’ll automatically round your custom bid to the nearest increment.

  3. Confirm your bid amount, including the applicable buyer’s premium.

  4. Agree to the Terms of Sale by clicking the “Confirm” button.

  5. Finally, you will receive a confirmation that your bid was submitted.

Please note: All bidders and bids must be approved by the auctioneer for the bid to be processed during the live auction.

How Absentee Bids Are Submitted Automatically:

Your absentee bid will be placed on your behalf based on the following criteria:

  1. If no other bids start at the starting price.

  2. If there are other absentee bids, the system starts at the lowest non-competitive amount.

Example: You place a $100 absentee bid and another bidder places a $300 bid. The starting price is $70. The first bid submitted will be $110 (or the next increment above $100), in your favor.

  3. If two absentee bids are for the same amount, the auction will open at that amount for the bidder who placed their bid first.

Example: You place a $100 bid on Tuesday, and another bidder places a $100 bid on Thursday. The auction will open at $100 in your favor.

  4. If the auction floor places a bid, the system will submit a competing bid at the next increment up.

  5. If someone bids live online using the bidding console, the system will match that bid amount.

  6. Bidding stops once your maximum absentee bid is reached. Live bidders must surpass your maximum absentee bid to become the high bidder.

I accidentally bid on an item and won. What can I do?

Absentee bids placed before the auction can be retracted up to 2 hours prior to the auction start time. Other types of bids cannot be retracted.

To retract an absentee bid:

  1. Visit your My Bids page.

  2. Locate the bid you wish to retract.

  3. Click the “Retract” button.

If you accidentally place a bid during the live auction, it is recommended to contact the auction house directly to explain the situation and inquire about possible assistance. You can do this by clicking the “Ask A Question” link on the item’s listing page.

Please note, KING LOUIES AUCTIONS serves as a facilitator for the auction. The decision to cancel or retract a sale is at the sole discretion of the auction house.

What are Reserve Prices?

Reserve Prices at KING LOUIES AUCTIONS

Reserve prices represent the minimum amount an item will sell for. These prices are set by auctioneers to ensure certain price targets are met. If the reserve price is not reached during bidding, the item will not be sold.

How Does the Reserve Price Affect Bidding?

  • Bidders will be notified when their absentee bids are below the set reserve price. These alerts appear on the item lot pages and on your My Bids page.

  • If your bid during a live auction is below the reserve price, you will be prompted to place a higher bid closer to the reserve.
Note: Auctions with live auctioneers conducting the sale may not prompt for a higher bid, as auctioneers are strongly discouraged from this behavior.

Guidelines Our Auction House Partners Follow When Setting Reserves:

  • Reserves should not exceed the low estimate, which is intended to be a reasonable and achievable final price.

  • Reserve prices cannot be changed after the item has been sold.

  • Once the reserve is met, the item is considered sold, and lots cannot be canceled afterward due to failure to reach a perceived value.

  • Bidders who win an item by bidding above the reserve price are not allowed to cancel the sale.

  • Buyers should always be informed if an item has a reserve price. The reserve price feature is used to communicate this clearly on our site.

  • Auction houses must not bid on their own items above the reserve price.

  • Any changes to reserves must be made no later than two hours prior to the start of the auction.

What is a buyer’s premium?

Buyer’s Premium at KING LOUIES AUCTIONS

A buyer’s premium is an additional service charge that the buyer is responsible for, which may be added to the final price of sold items. If a buyer’s premium applies, it will be clearly indicated on the item page.

Each auction house sets its own buyer’s premium rate.

What is Buy now & Make Offer?

What is Buy It Now / Make An Offer?

The Buy It Now / Make An Offer feature allows auction houses to sell items that may not have sold during the live auction or did not meet the reserve price. It also gives buyers the opportunity to purchase an item at or below the reserve price.

When a listing is marked Buy It Now, the bidding option is replaced by “Buy Now” and “Make an Offer” links. These listings are typically available for up to 14 days after the auction concludes.

  • Selecting “Buy Now” means you agree to purchase the lot immediately at the price set by the auctioneer.

  • Selecting “Make an Offer” lets you propose a different price to the auctioneer for consideration.

Please note, the auctioneer reserves the right to accept or decline any offers made on the item.

Why do I have a bid limit? How can I increase it?

Bid Limits at KING LOUIES AUCTIONS

Auction houses have the ability to limit the total value of items you can win in a given catalog. Bid limits are typically applied to new bidders on the KING LOUIES AUCTIONS platform, especially those with little or no bidding history, or new bidders at a specific auction house. Each auction house sets and manages its own bid limit policies.

You can check if a bid limit has been placed on you by reviewing the auction page or the item page.

If you’d like to request an increase to your bid limit, please contact the auction house directly by clicking the “ASK A QUESTION” link on any of their listings.

Will the Auction be able to see my maximum bid?

Will the Auction House Be Able to See My Maximum Bid?

Yes, the auction house can see your maximum absentee bid amount. This helps them understand the bidding activity and manage the auction process. However, your maximum bid is kept confidential from other bidders to maintain a fair bidding environment.

Disputes

An Auction House says I have a dispute on my account. How is that and how do I fix it?

If you have not successfully paid for an item you won, KING LOUIES AUCTIONS may file a dispute on your account. This serves as a warning to other auction houses regarding a failure to complete payment.

To resolve a dispute, you must communicate directly with KING LOUIES AUCTIONS.

Please note that unresolved disputes can impact your ability to bid in future auctions, so it’s important to address them promptly.

Disputes from Auction Houses no longer on King Louies Auctions?

  • The date of the auction

  • The item(s) associated with the dispute

To avoid disputes, always review the auction house's payment terms before placing a bid, and ensure you can make payment within their specified window.

Unresolved disputes may impact your ability to bid in future auctions. We strongly encourage you to resolve any disputes directly with the auction house as soon as possible. You can reach them using the contact information on your invoice or by clicking the "Ask a question" link on any of their listings.

Disputes are filed against your account by an auction house if you have not successfully paid for an item you won within the required time frame. These disputes serve as a flag to alert other auctioneers of non-payment activity.

You will receive a notification when a dispute is opened against you. To resolve it, you must contact the auction house directly using the information provided on your invoice or their listing page.

Unresolved disputes may limit your ability to bid in future auctions, so we encourage you to resolve them as quickly as possible.

To view your open disputes and contact the auction house directly, go to your Won Items page and filter by Status: Open Disputes, or click here.

If you need assistance with dispute resolution, please reach out to our Support Team at kinglouiesauctions@gmail.com.

I thought I won an item but the Auction house says I did not. What should I do?

If you believe you won an item but the auction house says otherwise, we recommend the following steps:

  1. Check Your Account:
Visit your Won Items page on KING LOUIES AUCTIONS to confirm whether the item appears in your purchase history.

  2. Review the Bid History:
Look at the bid history on the item’s listing page. This can help clarify if your bid was the highest at the close of the auction.

  3. Contact the Auction House Directly:
If you still believe there’s an error, reach out to the auction house. Use the contact information provided on the listing or your invoice page, or click the "Ask a question" link on their listing.

  4. Still Need Help?
If you're unable to resolve the issue with the auction house, contact our Support Team at kinglouiesauctions@gmail.com, and we’ll review the matter further.

What is a dispute?

A dispute is a flag placed on your account when you win an item in an auction but fail to complete payment.

Please note: All disputes are filed by the auction house, not by King Louies Auctions, and must be resolved directly with the auction house.

Disputes can affect your ability to bid in future auctions, so it’s important to resolve them promptly. You can do this by:

  • Paying the outstanding invoice

  • Or contacting the auction house to request a release from the sale

To view your open disputes and get in touch with the auction house, visit your Won Items page and look for items marked with an open dispute.

How can I be sure of the authenticity of the item?

KING LOUIES AUCTIONS does not guarantee the authenticity of the items listed on our platform, as we are not in possession of the items at any time. We encourage bidders to be fully informed before making any bidding decisions.

Please review each item carefully before placing a bid or making a purchase. Request any information you need in order to feel confident about bidding on an item you’re interested in.

This may include:

  • Reviewing all available images

  • Requesting additional photos from the Auction House

  • Asking for a detailed condition report

  • Confirming any specific details that are important to you but not mentioned in the item description

How do I ask questions about an item’s condition?

Refunds & Returns

How are refunds handled?

Each Auction House sets its own terms and conditions for each sale — including policies related to refunds and returns. Because these terms can vary from one auction to another, we strongly encourage all bidders to review the specific terms and conditions of the auction you plan to participate in for complete details.

What is your policy on returns?

KING LOUIES AUCTIONS is a marketplace made up of independent Auction Houses, Galleries, and Wholesalers. Because of this, refunds, returns, and exchanges are handled differently by each Auction House.

IMPORTANT: Always review the Auction House’s Terms and Conditions — found under the “View Auction Policy for Details” link and again during the registration process.

Here are examples of helpful questions you can ask the Auction House before or after the auction:

Questions to Ask Before Bidding

  • Condition:
“Are there any chips, scratches, stains, or other damage not mentioned in the listing or condition report?”

  • Shipping:
“How much would shipping to New York City cost?”
“Do you offer overnight or expedited shipping?”

  • Policies:
    “What is your return policy?”

After the Auction

The item I received is different from what I won — what should I do?
If you believe the item you received does not match what was shown in the auction, please reach out directly to the Auction House you purchased from.

If you’ve already tried contacting them by email and phone without a response, please contact us at kinglouiesauctions@gmail.com. We’ll reach out to the Auction House on your behalf to help resolve the issue.
